5 Things to do if you’re lonely

There’s no shame in feeling lonely.  Everyone experiences it at some point in their life. The danger is chronic loneliness, which can lead to depression, which can lead to some pretty terrible things.

Being alone is not a prerequisite for loneliness.  You can be in a relationship, but if it isn’t with the right person, you’ll still be lonely.  It’s been said, “The loneliest place on earth is in a crowd”.

You must understand; whatever you do to combat loneliness is just a distraction until you discover for what you are lonely. The distraction is temporary. You won’t be able to cure your loneliness until you figure this out. Read that again.  You’ll need to be honest with yourself.  Are you lonely for attention? Friendship? Intimacy? Conversation?

In the meantime, you can distract yourself out of loneliness, give yourself relief and possibly discover the thing that will bring you peace.

·        Adopt a pet.  I happen to believe animals have souls.  They have the capacity to love, they get mad, they feel shame and happiness, those are just a few of their emotions; which means you will experience a real relationship.  Pets become part of your family. They are great companions.  They are perpetual children.  Having the responsibility of caring for another living being who depends solely on you will give you a sense of fulfillment.

·        Explore YouTube.  I know this sounds unconventional.  Stay with me.  YouTube is a treasure trove. You can start by searching for topics that interest you. Once you find one video, you’ll be led to others.  The goal is to learn something new, to get excited and hopefully act on it. Start your own channel.  Why not?  Everyone has a tribe.  You may find yours there.

·        Join a book club.  Books are amazing.  A good book, depending on its length can distract you for weeks. While reading, you’ll learn about other cultures, places and activities.  Something will spark your interest and can lead you to a new hobby or adventure.  Book clubs offer interaction with other readers.  You’ll be able to discuss what you’ve read and share your ideas.  Inevitably, you’ll make new friends.

·        Join a gym.  Exercise is beneficial to your emotional health. When you exercise, your brain releases endorphins which will make you feel better. You’ll sleep better. You’ll get out of the house. If you hire a trainer, you’ll make a connection and have someone who’ll take the journey with you.

·        Volunteer.  There are many organizations looking for people to extend themselves to help others.  It’s a well-known fact; when you’re busy helping others, you’ll be too busy to worry about yourself. Googling volunteers in your area is a good place to start.
