Tis The Season. Dos and Don’ts. (Bonus: Black business gifts you may not have thought of)

Tis the season for giving!  Are you ready??

A lot of us are making lists and counting coins in preparation for the holiday shopping season. 2020 hasn’t given us much to celebrate.  The holidays will be a welcomed distraction and who doesn’t like to shop? 😊

Gift giving has been a long tradition that dates back thousands of years.  As human beings, we are social creatures who enjoy each other’s company and expressing our feelings through the giving of gifts.  Whether it’s an expression of love, appreciation or celebration, the giving of gifts is engrained in our DNA.

The psychology of why gift giving is so rewarding is simple; it allows people to connect. The giver of a gift expresses their feelings and emotions by sending a gift with the hope of being able to share the same emotions with the receiver of the gift. Making connections with people around us gives us a sense of purpose and feeling of satisfaction.  It enlightens the soul and brings out the best in us. Other benefits:

·        WE FEEL HAPPY – Giving gifts makes you feel better about yourself and makes you happier in your own life.

·        IMPROVES STATE OF MIND - Feeling happy inevitably improves your state of mind.

·        IT’S CONTAGIOUS – When you give; the recipient becomes more likely to give.  This is in part due to the release of endorphins.

A FEW TIPS:

·        Don’t - Spend more than you can afford.

·        Don’t - Give with the expectation of receiving a gift in return.

·        Don’t - Tell a person how or when to use your gift.  Once you give it; it’s theirs to use as they please.

·        Don’t - Give a gift you wouldn’t want to receive. (This includes re-gifting)

·        Don’t – Dress up a bad gift. Pretty paper won’t help. If you have to explain it, it probaby isn’t a good gift.

·        Do - Consider the receiver’s personality, taste and style…Not yours.

·        Do – Personalized gifts.  Everyone likes to see their name.

·        Do – Something out of the ordinary.

·        Do – Have fun!
