Why you should be rubbing snail mucus on your face

Eeeewww!! Snail mucus sounds gross and utterly unappealing. The more appealing terms are; snail mticulos, snail essence, nursing snail mticulos, snail serum and snail extract.  Those terms sound better, but it’s all mucus.  Usually when you think of snails; garlic, butter, baguettes, and Chardonnay come to mind, not the slime.  Amazingly, the slime has wonderful effects on the skin.

People have been using snail essence as a beauty product for centuries.   Back around 400 B.C. in ancient Greece, Hippocrates reportedly prescribed crushed snail shells in an ointment to treat inflammation.  In small rural communities in southern Italy, snail mucus has been used to alleviate warts, calluses, and acne. The Chilean workers often cut their hands and arms on the metal cages, and they noticed that the snail slime seemed to heal the wounds and soften their skin.  In modern times, there are spas where you can have live snails leave their trail of essence on your face.  😊

How is snail essence harvested for products? I’m glad you asked.  Traditional methods of harvesting snail essence were cruel – the snails were essentially dunked in pots of water with salt, vinegar or other chemicals to force them to excrete mucin. Thankfully, the methods for harvesting snail mucin have changed considerably.  In Italy, for example, snail mucin is extracted by immersing the snails in a special steam bath that acts like a spa for snails. The snails are not harmed in this process.  On other farms, the snails are simply placed in an environment where they can move over a bumpy surface, because this causes them to make slime like they do naturally. The mucin is then harvested this way.
